SlitterHead and Silent Hill - References and Similarities

Slitterhead and Silent Hill

In the previous articles, we gathered all information about "SLITTERHEAD" and also had a detailed review of the game.

And now let's talk about similarities between "SlitterHead" and "Silent Hill".

The game was created by former members of "Team Silent" - Keiichiro Toyama and Akira Yamaoka. Therefore, you can notice some references to their previous project here. And the story of "SlitterHead" is largely based on ideas from "Silent Hill".

Let's try to find all the interesting parallels between the games.

There are no spoilers in this article. So you can read it even if you have not played "SlitterHead" yet.

SLITTERHEAD and SILENT HILL

References and Similarities

1) The name "SlitterHead" is abbreviated as "SH".

The creator of the game, Keiichiro Toyama, mentioned in an interview that the name was chosen in such a way as to be similar to "Silent Hill".

Kowlong city from the horror game Slitterhead for PC and PS5

2) Just like in "Silent Hill", the story again unfolds in a small town where mysterious events occur. But this time the town is not American - but Asian.

Also, both games are built on the "semi-openworld" principle. We are given the opportunity to walk around the streets of the town quite freely and look for all sorts of secret nooks and crannies - but it's not a full-fledged "open world".

Strange fog in the game

3) During battles with monsters, a strange thick fog suddenly appears on the streets of the town. It's reminiscent of the mysterious fog in Silent Hill.

However, the fog performs a different function here - it blocks our path and does not allow us to run away from the monsters.

Lisa the nurse character in Slitterhead horror game

4) Among the characters in SlitterHead there is a nurse named Lisa. She is a "reimagining" of Lisa Garland from Silent Hill 1.

Lisa the nurse

5) During the game, you can hear a dialogue between Lisa and doctor Alex, in which the nurse mentions "strange drugs". Most likely, this is also a reference to the story of Silent Hill (in SH1, doctor Kaufmann hooked Lisa on a weird self-made drug called "PTV").

Religious cult in the horror game Slitter Head

6) SlitterHead features a religious cult with an unusual system of beliefs. A similar idea with mysterious cults can be found in Silent Hill and Forbidden Siren.

7) There is a moment in the game when we are suddenly drawn into a surreal world, which is created from the thoughts and memories of another person. Just like in Silent Hill games.

Battle with monsters in Sliterhead

8) There is also a Silent Hill-esque idea with the materialization of images from the human subconscious.

The characters are able to create "blood weapons" with the power of thought, which are the embodiment of their various memories. You can read more about the symbolism of each character's weapon in this article.

Cybil and the parasite monster from the Silent Hill game for PS1

9) In Silent Hill 1, there were some weird parasitic monsters that could enter the human body and control it (one of these parasites can be seen during the amusement park scene).

This idea with "parasites" in SH1 probably was the prototype for the monsters in SlitterHead.

Mysterious artifact from SlitterHead horror game

10) The first Silent Hill game featured a triangular artifact called "Flauros", which had mystical powers.

In SlitterHead, there is an item with similar magical properties - and it plays a similar role in the story (but now this item is shaped like a small ball).

Story cutscene from the game Slitter Head

11) Harry Mason got into a car accident when he saw a girl right in the middle of the road.

There is a similar scene in "SlitterHead": the character named Alex gets into an accident because a mysterious man in white clothes stands on the road in front of him.

Intro cutscene from the SlitterHead PC game

12) At the very beginning of SH1, our character Harry walks along a narrow dark alley and finds a mutilated corpse there.

There is a somewhat similar moment at the beginning of SlitterHead. In the introductory video, we see a man with a flashlight walking along a dark alley - and he finds a human corpse.

Alex and the secret hospital passage in SlitterHead

13) In Silent Hill 1, there was a scene in Alchemilla hospital when we could move a shelf by the wall - and find a door behind it, which leads us to a secret basement section of the hospital.

There is exactly the same moment in SlitterHead: in the local hospital, our character moves a shelf - and notices a secret passage in the wall leading to the basement.

14) SlitterHead features a gameplay idea, which is similar to the "radio noise" from SH1. When we are looking for monsters in the city - we can hear an increasing humming sound as we approach the monster. The louder this sound is - the closer the monster is. So you can find it by paying close attention to the sound.

Doni character with the Ouroboros T-Shirt

15) One of the characters in SlitterHead (a boy named Doni) wears a T-shirt with the inscription "Ouroboros". In SH1, there was a mystical artifact called "The Disc of Ouroboros".

Silent Hill final boss - Incubus monster

16) Among the bosses in the game, there is a flying winged demon with naked female breasts, similar to the final boss from SH1.

I'll tell you more about this demon in the second part of the article (which will contain spoilers).

Monsters from Silent Hill 3 and SlitterHead

17) Also, some monsters in SlitterHead strongly resemble creatures called "Numb Body" from Silent Hill 3.

18) There was an unusual song in Spanish language in the final credits of Silent Hill 1 - it was called "Esperandote". In "SlitterHead", the developers again decided to put a song in an exotic language in the game's final credits (the new song is in Cantonese - this is one of the dialects of Chinese).

To be continued...

In the next part of the article, we'll explore 17 more references and plot similarities.

And we'll see how the authors of SlitterHead recreate and reimagine the characters and some story elements from Silent Hill.

I'll warn you right away that the second part will contain spoilers. But it also does contain all the best and most interesting stuff.
